You Can Bike Too: Shortlisted for Mick George's Skip of Gold!

You Can Bike Too is an amazing, award-winning all-ability cycling project at Milton Country Park, managed by Cambridge Sport Lakes Trust and supported by our awesome, experienced instructors and volunteers.

This year alone we've already had some fantastic firsts, with children and adults enjoying the great physical and mental health benefits of getting outdoors and cycling, many of whom never thought they could!

Every week many families with a range of ages and mixed abilities, enjoy time and an activity that they can do together, which we're often told is a rare and special treat for all of them.

We've had the slow progression of young people going from being too overwhelmed to leave the car park who are now cycling the park unsupported and grinning all the way, to children with mobility impairments peddling away from their parents on their first ever ride, much to their amazement!

We've ridden wheelchair users in our specially adapted wheelchair bike with people who don't need to speak to share their thrill at travelling through the park on a bike, and have cycled a stroke survivor who had been a keen cyclist and never thought he would ride again: 'this feel like hope, to me' he said as he pedaled with us on our side-by-side bike.

These are the reasons why we are so proud to be a part of this project and why we ask you to vote for You Can Bike Too for Mick George's Bag of Gold competition!  Funds will allow us to reach more people by covering extra summer sessions, giving families a chance to experience a rare weekday outdoor activity for all the family!

Please take a moment to vote for You Can Bike Too on Mick George's website here: https://www.mickgeorge.co.uk/cambsgold18

Thank you so much!

New Parking Machine - card only!

Homepage_NEWSLETTER.jpg

Regular visitors will know that we have now been without a car park machine for many months.  This was due to the continuous theft and vandalism of the old machine which eventually left it irreparable.  The resulting cost to us as a charity has been huge, both in terms of replacing this machine, lost car park revenue and staffing at busy times.
Thank you for your patience during this time.

The good news is that we now have a new machine up and running!
After some deliberation we took the decision to make this a card only machine.  We hope that this will deter theft and vandalism as there will never be cash in this machine.

Those who come without a card can still purchase a ticket from the café but please only use this option as a last resort.

Do remember to bring a payment card if using the car park and please continue to support us by paying and displaying your car park ticket - thank you!

MCP Team

P.S - all major debit and credit cards will be accepted with the exception of American Express.

Playground Appeal Success!

PLAYGROUND SUCCESS Small.jpg

We are very excited to announce that we have reached our fundraising target for a brand new playground at Milton Country Park!

This playground is only possible thanks to the generous donations and support from our visitors, local businesses and key funding awards, including £40,000 from the Amey Community Fund and £60,000 from WREN (please see below for a full list of our supporters).

It's fantastic that we are now able to add a playground which better reflects our beautiful park setting and provides a stimulating, exciting place for children to enjoy playing, learning and physical activity.

This project plan was one which we felt was an achievable target.  There is still much more we can add; for example extra play pieces, seating and landscaping and planting.  Fundraising shall therefore continue until our work is complete and if you haven't already you can donate via our website.  Remember, the more we can raise the better our playground can be!

We aim to have this new playground open in June 2018 and will keep you updated with progress on our website and social media.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us with this project, it would not be possible without you!

We are looking forward to an exciting summer of play and possibilities and look forward to seeing you in the park soon...

Milton Country Park reaches its target for a new playground in time for summer!

Children in Cambridgeshire are set to get an exciting new playground at Milton Country Park thanks to a £60,000 grant from funding body WREN.

The money, awarded by WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund, will be used to provide a much needed renovation of the playground at the popular park just north of Cambridge.

Mick Woolhouse, director and secretary of its governing charity, Cambridge Sport Lakes Trust, believes the improvements will be a great addition for the park and its visitors.

He says: “It’s fantastic that WREN has awarded us this money.  Milton Country Park’s visitor numbers grow every year and outdoor play is a vital part of what we aim to provide.  We are really looking forward to creating an exciting playground which better reflects the needs of our visitors and which families can enjoy for many years to come.”

WREN is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, biodiversity and heritage projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund.  Cheryl Raynor, WREN’s grant manager for Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, says: “We are delighted to be supporting the Milton Country Park Playground Project and pleased that our funding will provide such a fantastic facility for children visiting the park. WREN is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and we’re really looking forward to seeing this one take shape soon.”

For more information about WREN funding contact Cheryl Raynor at cheryl.raynor@wren.org.uk or visit

Milton Country Park’s playground appeal was launched in 2017 and has received overwhelming support by local people and businesses, including an additional £40,000 awarded by the Amey Community Fund.  Their total has now reached over £128,000.

Success at Cambridge’s first Cyclo-Cross event!

CycloCross_small.jpg

Milton Country Park saw over 400 riders this past weekend taking part in the
penultimate round of the Eastern Cyclo-Cross League, the first time this event has
been held in the city.
The event was organised by Cambridge Junior Cycling Club (CJCC), with help from
C6 Bikes, a local specialist bike shop, with premises in Waterbeach, four miles north
of Cambridge. CJCC regularly hold off road coaching and skill sessions on a
Saturday afternoon at Milton Country Park.
All age categories were well represented. It was particularly pleasing the event
enjoyed a number of local junior entries – over 140 entrants were aged 14 years and
younger – and many riders travelled in from much further afield to participate in
Cambridge’s first Cyclo-Cross race.
After several days of heavy rain made some areas of the course more challenging,
the day itself brought bright sunshine for the spectators to enjoy and for the
competitors to experience fast racing conditions. The course was widely praised for
its design and technical detail, utilising the unique topography of wooded areas
within the park. Racing families and spectators were also to enjoy the recreational
facilities of the park including its café and play areas.
The Eastern Cyclo-Cross league is made up of 16 rounds which take place
throughout East Anglia over the winter, with competitors of all abilities ranging from
under 8s to 60 plus. Prizes are awarded for each race, and trophies for the overall
winners of the league.
Stephen James Senior winner said “This is one of the most enjoyable and involving
courses I have ridden all season and could easily be developed into an amazing
venue”

'Welcome to Milton Country Park' Memorial Sculpture

PeterGarside.jpg

We've had many people asking and commenting on the lovely new welcome sculpture at the entrance to the park.

The sculpture was gifted to the park by Peter Garside (picture above, centre) as a memorial to his late wife, Pauline.  Peter and Pauline walked their dogs in the park regularly for many years, finding it especially helpful as a way of enjoying the outdoors when Pauline was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.  Pauline even tried cycling for the first time in 50 years in the park with inclusive cycling project You Can Bike Too!  Pauline loved the park and Peter felt it would be a fitting tribute to add something really special to the entrance, welcoming visitors as they arrive.

We have worked with Rowan Humberstone on several projects now including our orchard signs and thought they would be the perfect organisation to create a memorial sculpture.  Rowan is a small Cambridge charity and arts centre working with people with learning disabilities by sharing skills and giving meaningful opportunities through accessing the arts.  Mr Garside met with Rowan and park staff to discuss ideas and Rowan's student artists, Ash and Francis (pictured with Mr Garside above) worked on the chosen design.  The design is carved from oak and depicts some of the wildlife Pauline enjoyed seeing in the park, including a swan and coot by lily pads carved on the front of the design and a beautiful dragonfly on the back.

We think this is a really special addition to the park and would like to thank Peter for this donation and Rowan for their care in creating and installing this piece.  We hope our visitors' will enjoy it for many years to come!

You can also find out more about Peter Garside's work, raising awareness on how to appeal for NHS support when caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's, by visiting his website.  Peter's story has helped many people access the help and support they deserve.

Find out more about Rowan at their Winter Warmer Event, Wednesday 6th December, 5pm-8pm.  Come in out of the cold and join Rowan for their winter open evening.  Visit the studios, see the students’ artwork and you might even find a few unique Christmas presents!  Refreshments and music will be provided.

Autumn Festival Raises Vital Funds for New Playground!

Last Sunday we held our fourth Autumn Festival, our annual fundraiser, and what a fantastic day it was!

The park is run by registered charity, Cambridge Sport Lakes Trust and receives no external funding so this event is an important part of the calendar, raising funds which help the park remain open during the winter months.  It's also a great family day packed with delicious food, live music, craft and wild outdoor activities!  The sun shone and we were delighted to see so many people in the park enjoying the day.

As advertised £1 in every ticket was promised to go directly towards our playground appeal.  This includes our free children's tickets!

We can now reveal that the Festival raised a fabulous £4,000 to go towards our total!

Thank you to everyone who came and supported the park, we hope you enjoyed the day!!

To bolster our fundraising efforts we have two significant fundraising applications in progress and hope to have some news for you before Christmas.  In the meantime if you can help in any way please get in touch here: mcp@cambridgesportlakes.org.uk or visit our playground appeal page!

View2.jpg

SUP Club is moving to Saturday morning for the rest of September!  This means there will be NO SUP Club this Thursday!

Our club sessions are open to anyone with a Ready to Ride or Born to Ride passport to give you a chance to paddle independently and enjoy the lake in an open session.

From this Saturday and for the rest of September these sessions will run from 9-10am on a Saturday morning.  It is important you arrive early as the container will be locked at 9am.

We are still running courses through September with two more Ready 2 Ride courses this season.  From October only Ready to Ride SUPers will be allowed to paddle.  We will continue to monitor the water temperature and aim to continue sessions until it dips too low.

There will be also monthly Cam paddles for those with your own board  - follow the SUP Club Facebook page for more info.

Playground Appeal!

Playground Appeal!

The playgrounds at Milton Country Park have been much loved and well-used for many years.  Our equipment was installed in 1999 and is now at the end of its useable life.  The park has a thriving community and outdoor play is a key element to what makes the park such a great resource.

It's vital that we have a playground which better reflects our beautiful park setting and provides a stimulating, exciting place for children to enjoy playing, learning and physical activity.

New playgrounds are expensive and go far beyond the maintenance budget of the park.  Milton Country Park is managed by registered charity, Cambridge Sport Lakes Trust and receives no external funding.  The park costs hundreds of pounds every day to remain open and large scale improvements such as this are only possible through fundraising.

How You Can Help

Donate

We have identified several local funding opportunities but there is no guarantee of success and even if successful they will still not fully cover costs.  We are therefore asking for your help.  If you enjoying visiting Milton Country Park, if your children love playing in the park, and if you would like them to enjoy more exciting, challenging play, then please help by giving a donation!

Please donate - we need your support to make this happen!
Together we hope to create something really special that families can enjoy for years to come!

Fundraise

We welcome support from local business and fundraisers.  If you have an idea for raising money we'd love to work with you!  If you are a local business keen to support community projects then please do get in touch

Sign our Petition!

Fundraising isn't just about raising money, it's about gathering and evidencing local support.  If you would like to see our project go ahead then please add your name and any comments to the petition on our web page.

Thank you to everyone who has already supported our playground!  We are very grateful for all donations however big or small!

New Playground design

Our playground design was created following several consultations with visitors and local school children so that we could be sure we were creating something people really wanted, as well as suiting the needs of the park.

The new play design incorporates priorities highlighted in our research including...

  • A natural design in keeping with the park setting
  • A place where all ages can play together
  • A zip-wire!
  • Climbing
  • More swings
  • Encourages independent play
  • Something for all abilities

The children were so keen on having a zipwire we've added a double zipwire to the design so that they can play with their friends!
The design has been broken down into three phases.  How much we can do is entirely dependent on how much we can raise.  This design can be added to with more play equipment, landscaping and planting, seating.  As our funds grow so can our ideas!!
