The war memorial is actually more than the rather fine obelisk carved by the Kindersley Workshop. For a start the slabs around the memorial are carved with the names of five invasion beaches. In addition the lawn south of the obelisk forms part of the memorial with the specimen trees there being part of the design.
Five trees surrounding the memorial representing the nationalities of the soldiers who fought on the invasion beaches. The two American red oaks, two English oaks and one Canadian silver maple were planted in 1994 to mark the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings. The British Legion, local regiments and Burma Star attended the unveiling ceremony.
