out of hours car park release system changing

From Monday 15 October South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) is moving to a new system to release Milton Country Park vistors' cars from the park out of hours.

At present the park's two rangers have to release cars from the park during the night. Under the new system, visitors to the park who find themselves locked in will have to call a new contact number (01223) 457457. This will put them through to Cambridge City Council's out of hours service who will pass the call to SCDC on call staff. The previous contact number for the rangers will no longer be in service so this will be the only way to contact someone to open the gates.

In the past SCDC has not made any charge for the release of cars, even though there has been a large expense to the council. Under this new scheme the council will have to pay for the service that Cambridge City Council and its staff provide and will need to pass this cost on. The charge for the release of cars from Milton Country Park will now be £50. Until Friday 26 October the gates to the park will be locked at 5.30pm. From Saturday 27 October and throughout the winter the gates will be locked at 4.30pm. Anyone who finds their car locked in should consider leaving their car overnight and returning for it in the morning when the gates open at 8am. No charge will be made in these circumstances.

Overnight SCDC staff are on call to deal with emergencies in our housing stock. Visitors need to know that if they do miss park closing time and find themselves locked in they will need to wait for someone to reach the park. This could take time if the officer is already on an emergency call.

Councillor Vicky Ford, portfolio holder for resources, said,

We need to make these changes because in previous years the expense of letting cars out the park out of hours has been quite considerable. There will be no exceptions to the system so visitors shoud make sure they check the notices in the car park and visitor centre for closing times.
